Lia Sorgen joined the Fisher Center at Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center as a Project Director in the spring of 2020. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and health studies from Dickinson College, where she worked as a research assistant in Dr. Marie Helweg-Larsen’s Stigma Laboratory. Following her undergraduate studies, Ms. Sorgen completed a Cancer Research Training Award fellowship at the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health. During this fellowship, she assisted Dr. Stephanie Land with the Smoking Cessation at Lung Examination (SCALE) initiative and conducted independent research examining smoking behaviors, self-concept, and self-affirmation with Dr. Annette Kaufman.
Ms. Sorgen has a keen interest in health communication, health education, and perceived risk, all of which are particularly pertinent in the context of cancer genetic testing and counseling within at-risk families. At the same time, she is also focused on developing project management expertise across various disciplines.
Currently, Ms. Sorgen is pursuing an MBA at the Georgetown McDonough School of Business to further explore her interests in project management, organizational behavior, translational science, and the business side of health, with a particular emphasis on healthcare, health equity, health education, and health communication.
