Karen Lisa Smith, MD, MPH

Medical Oncologist

Dr. Smith is medical oncologist at Sibley Memorial Hospital.  Previously, she was an Assistant Professor of Medicine in Hematology and Oncology at Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) and Attending Physician, Division of Hematology/Oncology at Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Smith has peer reviewed publications on racial disparities in adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer, and on the association between ductal carcinoma in situ and BRCA1/2 mutations. She received an American Society of Clinical Oncology Young Investigator Award for a research project on proteomic profiling of women undergoing breast biopsy. In addition, she recently received funding from Genentech to develop and assess educational materials about genetic counseling and testing for African American women.  She and her colleague Dr. Ana Barac were awarded a 2012 Fisher pilot grant entitled, "Cardiac function in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers with a history of breast cancer treated with anthracyclines."
